I write what I like to read. But I do not "write for myself." It is a concept I've never understood, since that would only be really possible if I had some amnesia drug that allowed me to discover my story and read it as if it was another author's. I will never have a 'reader experience' of my writing including comic books (unless that fountain that makes you forget your work in The Great Divorce is real -- I really hope it is!).
I write for people with similar tastes and interests as me. In some very specific cases, a piece of writing is for God's eyes alone, the Audience of One. When I'm really immersed in the act of writing, audience and author both tend to disappear, and I write for the story, as in, to make it as good as it can possibly be. Thinking about what is best for the work itself, as well as gaining validation from God (one reason I say my Primary Function is Worship), helps me to not get too focused on the admiration of others.
